Welcome to the Church Planting Resource Center!

Church planting means hard work in the harvest field. Like planting an orchard, it means preparing the planter, having a compelling vision of what you want the orchard to look like, getting others to help so you’re not doing it all by yourself, discerning the type of soil, and then working step-by-step and stage-by-stage to prepare the soil, plant the seeds, tend the growth…in anticipation for the harvest.

Many church planters are desperate for resources for each stage of a church plant. Too often, training centers and boot camps provide material that is too far in the future. You need help NOW with the stage you’re at.

This online Church Planting Resource Center is designed to help you prepare for church planting and guide you through the first twelve months of a typical plant. There are some additional resources available as well for subsequent years and more.

PROPOSAL
Audio/Video Systems for Church Plants

One of the most expensive and difficult-to-control aspects of starting a new church is providing
adequate sound and video equipment for the contemporary practice of worship. Three
startlingly difficult problems face every church plant.
1) Assembling a complete & compatible sound equipment package without breaking
the budget.
2) Learning to use that equipment to provide pleasing and musical sound reinforcement
in facilities that often are acoustically challenging.
3) Finding ways to load-in, load-out, transport and store that equipment every week.
Not every church has people within its core group with the expertise necessary to choose
equipment appropriate to the size, needs and intent of the church plant. There are even
fewer people with the experience to adjust a system to sound its best in the gyms, cafeterias,
auditoriums, theaters and former stores which are converted into churches every weekend.
Our objective is to free the prospective church planter from the burden of these mindnumbing
chores and provide a consistent path for future church plants to follow.

We can provide:
1) Complete packages of sound & video equipment fully installed in equipment racks
and labeled for easy setup.
2) Preliminary setup and equalization of the whole sound system in the facilities to be
used each week; training in equipment use and in mixing music for worship services.
3) Customized equipment storage carts to simplify the packing & transportation of all
the churches equipment every week.
The first step in providing any of these services is having a long talk with the church planter &
those members of his core group who will work on both sides of the equipment. Their plans
and hopes for the audio/visual components of worship services will form the core around
which an appropriate equipment package can be planned and assembled.
The next few pages provide a sample of the range of ways in which we might work with
church planters and a preliminary guide to our services and equipment costs.
Please call or email us if you have questions or simply want to get a project going!

Figure 1:
Complete packages of sound & video equipment
As a ballpark figure, the equipment components of a complete
audio/video system for a church plant can be bought for approximately
$10,000. Of course, alternate choices may alter that figure up or down
by several thousand dollars.
We offer several levels of help in the purchase of complete packages of
sound and video equipment.
• You buy only the equipment list from us. The list (provided as an Excel
file) gives up-to-date equipment options, prices & sources. See Figure
1 below for a partial sample of a list.
• We order all the equipment based on consultation with the church
plant and ship/bring it to the church plant. They install it in racks, test
it, figure out how best to set it up, etc.
• After consultation with the church plant, we order all the equipment,
install & wire the rack units, color-code the cables, test the complete
setup, create set-up instructions and matching color-coded hook-up
diagrams and deliver the whole package to the church plant.

Figure 2 (next page) shows a color-coded hook-up diagram.
List Only:
$100

Figure 2: Sample Speaker and Monitor Connections
Setup, Equalization & Training
Though choosing and buying the right equipment comprises much of the
hard work in building a sound/video system, it is only the first step to creating
a pleasing and useful presentation environment for the church plant.
Unless the system itself is tuned (equalized) to the facility in which the
church meets and its operators trained to carefully adjust the system for
optimum sound every time it is used, the expenditure will prove to be
nothing but a source of frustration.

To that end, we offer:
• Preliminary setup and equalization of the sound/video system in the
facilities the church plant will use. This entails a complete setup of all
equipment, testing of all wireless mics, thorough equalization of the
sound sytem to the room and adjustment of anti-feedback devices.
• A half-day (3-4 hours), hands-on seminar on the practice of audio
mixing. The seminar will train members of the sound team in the use
of their specific equipment and in the art of mixing music & speaking
for worship services.
Master Setup & EQ:
$400
Art of Mixing & EQ:
$320

Mobile Storage Carts
Few settings bring less joy to a sound technician than facing stacks of
amps, snarling cable, stolid speakers and irritable mic stands (always
sticking their feet out!), knowing they must all be packed away carefully
for the next weekend’s use. Though grandma’s littany of “A place for
everything and everything in its place” may seem out-of-place in a
church plant, when working with A/V equipment it’s just the ticket!
We have working models (complete plans coming soon) for three different
storage carts; two for sound system equipment (see Figure 3) & one
for children’s/nursery supplies. One of these designs has also been modified
to store coffee-makers and refreshment supplies.

Here are the options:
• You purchase the working drawings from us. They include alternate
structures, complete materials lists, cut list and list of suppliers for specialty
items like urethane wheels. If the church plant has some folks
who are handy with tools, this may be a lower-cost option.
• We construct the cart(s) that you request & ship/bring them to the
church plant ready to use.

Drawings Only:
$30 ea.
$75 full set of 3
Complete Carts:
$600 ea.

Equipment Needs for Public Worship

Mike Brown, Director of Church Planting, NWC of the ECC

This list will vary, depending on the model and style of your worship gatherings, the location you meet at, and the size of the group you hope to reach. This list is a rather general list of the items most new churches will need to get started.

Trailer - Estimated Cost $3,000
• This is dependent on the amount of equipment and the storage available at the meeting site.
• Be sure to buy a trailer large enough for growth
• Lettering for trailer
• Carts or crates on wheels to haul equipment

Sound Gear - Estimated Cost $10,000-$15,000
• Speakers (buy the best you can afford to get)
• One lapel microphone and at least 4 corded microphones ( don’t skimp here either, but good quality mics can be purchased at reasonable prices)
• Drum mic
• Guitar pickups
• CD player/recorder
• Equalizer
• Amplifier (unless the speakers have built in amps)
• Portable cabinet or rack for the components
• Subwoofer
• Power conditioner
• Digital recording device
• Cables (mics and speaker)
• Snake
• Speaker stands
• Lots of extension cords and power strips.
• Mixer and a case to transport it in.
• Monitors (4)
• Cases or storage tubs for all the smaller gear
• Folding tables or carts to operate from
• Table covers
• Blank tapes/CD’s, DVD’s
• Cases for CD’s
• Label making equipment

Worship Equipment - Estimated Cost $2,500
• Drum kit (electronic or acoustic)
• Cases for drums
• Keyboard (buy a professional quality instrument) and storage case.
• Cables for keyboard and other instruments
• Mic stands (4)
• Mic cables
• Music stands
• Plastic storage tubs are the cheapest storage device
• Communion serving cups, plates, cloths, etc.
• Bibles

Instruments - Estimated Cost $5,000
• Most musicians will provide their own, but the church may need to purchase the drums and keyboard.

Worship Space - Estimated Cost $3,000
• Drapes and poles used by rental stores for conventions can be purchased and will help create both backdrops and also help close a large space and make it more intimate until the church grows into the bigger space. The drapes, plates and poles can simply be pushed out to enlarge the worship space.
• Artificial plants (the more of these the better). They are great for hiding cords, and creating more warmth in an otherwise sterile space like a school gym.
• Additional lighting depending on the space rented.

Facility Principles for Church Plants

- In order for church plants to begin to think about land or facility purchase, the baseline numbers in the Covenant have been: 100+ in attendance and over $100,000 in local giving. We need to update these figures, since typical land & construction costs are now running between one to two million dollars. Rob may have updated numbers; or may have numbers that factor-in whether we’re looking at an urban, suburban, or rural project. Bottom-line, we don’t want a church to have over 1/3 of it’s local giving going for facility. If it does, it severely limits what the church can do in terms of staff, ministry and mission.

- Church Plants tend to do best in one-day a week facilities like schools or community-centers. These offer the lowest cost, are in locations that the community recognizes, have ample parking, and are places where families feel safe. Churches also rent theaters, however they generally have fixed-seating and limit what you can do with worship and children. Churches rent other churches, like you have at Trinity. This works especially well when the plant prefers to meet at another time than Sunday morning and when the church has a more traditional space that fits the core values and worship style of the plant. The down-side of one-day a week facilities is that the launch team needs to do set-up each week; however, we find that most plants are willing to do this for 5-7 years and many find that this is a way of engaging men and increasing the commitment level of the church. After setting up for 5-7 years, people are really ready to pay the cost of building, etc.

- Our experience is that Church Plants in 24-7 spaces tend be smaller and grow slower—both because the size of space they rent limits the size the church can get and because people feel ‘settled’ in their own space which fosters a ‘small church’ mentality.

- Successful church facilities have the right combination of 3 spaces inside: worship space that can accommodate 200 (so you can move to 2 services), gathering/fellowship space that is 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the sanctuary, and good kids ministry space. They also are visible, accessible, attractive, and have adequate parking.
